Get to know the new cast members of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with first look images and descriptions for each character. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued on strong last season, but was the beneficiary of a somewhat surprising renewal for a fifth season - possibly forced upon ABC by Disney. The renewal will allow the showrunners and writers to craft a story around the team’s mysterious kidnapping at the end of season 4, one that has now brought them to an unknown space location.
It is still unclear just who has kidnapped the agents, but it was reasonable to assume Coulson and his team would not be the only people at this new setting. The inclusion of Jeff Ward earlier this year was the only bit of casting information to surface for season 5, but he is far from the only new face, and we now know who they are and what they look like.
EW has released a group of character profiles for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newbies. The profiles not only give fans a chance to see what each of these new characters look like, but also reveal who will be playing them, and important character details. Below, you will find the photos accompanied by the character descriptions laid out by EW.
This is the first announcement that Eve Harlow (The 100), Coy Stewart (Bella and the Bulldogs), and Pruitt Taylor Vince (Heroes Reborn) have joined the series, and it is a rare instance where their characters aren’t shrouded in mystery to begin with. The descriptions for each of their characters (and Ward’s for that matter) are not terribly revealing, only really laying the foundation for who these characters are at their core.
“Deke is the ultimate survivor and roguish scavenger, the guy who can get people what they need, but at a price of his asking. With his sharp mind and quick wit, he is both a real asset in a tight spot and a hard man to trust.”
“Tess is resourceful, striving to be self-sufficient in very desperate circumstances, but she has hung on to her hopes for a better future for herself and those closest to her. She is living proof that even in the toughest of times, good people will still fight for each other.”
“Flint is a young man who’s been forced to grow up fast in a tough environment, but hasn’t lost his desire to make something of himself. When he crosses paths with our S.H.I.E.L.D. team, he just may get the chance to prove that he’s capable of big things. Fun fact: Flint is based on a character from Inhumans comics who has the ability to control rock and stone.”
“Grill is a gruff taskmaster, lording over those under his command with an unforgiving temperament. He has no illusions about the world he lives in and this makes him a man not easily fooled, or crossed.”
The amount of details the photos and descriptions reveal is not much, but they may make it less likely Jack Flag is introduced as we once theorized. The first look image at Ward’s Deke matches the character believed to be Jack Flag’s description, so Deke is either a nickname, a change to the source material, or a misdirect (a la Chloe Bennet playing “Skye” originally). The descriptions do note that Coy Stewart’s character is inspired by the Inhuman Flint - and even shares the same name - but it does not confirm whether or not he will have his earth manipulating abilities (also known as Geokinesis). Neither Tess nor Grill appear to be based on a comic character either, so fans will have to wait until the fifth season begins to learn more about them.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5’s two-hour premiere airs Friday, December 1st at 8pm on ABC.
