The first image from Jigsaw teases fans with one of the title character’s latest terrifying games. In its time atop the horror genre during the 2000s, the Saw franchise was known for several things, Jigsaw’s “I want to play a game” catchphrase and creepy tricycle-riding puppet avatar among them. Perhaps more than anything else, what came to epitomize Saw were the sadistically clever traps that Jigsaw - or one of his apprentices - would place a hapless victim in to see if they were “worthy” of continuing their lives.
Arguably the most famous of Jigsaw’s traps in the series is the “reverse beartrap,” used on the face of Shawnee Smith’s Amanda in the original, although she is one of the few to survive a Jigsaw attempt on her life. Fans did eventually get to see that trap work it’s full horrifying magic in a later entry, showing that Amanda got off easy - for the moment anyway. Other particularly memorable traps include the pit of needles that Amanda is thrown into in Saw II - she just couldn’t catch a break - and a trap which literally required a pound of flesh to survive.
EW has gotten their hands on the first official image from Saw’s upcoming 8th installment, simply entitled Jigsaw. Appropriately, the image appears to show yet another victim struggling with a diabolical death trap. The victim in question is Anna (played by Supergirl vet Laura Vandervoort), and she looks to be drowning in some type of sand pit, although it’s not completely clear what exactly the substance is that she’s seemingly about to die in.
The actual plot of Jigsaw is still mostly vague, outside of it concerning bodies turning up that appear to have been killed by the titular killer, or at least someone pretending to be him. Fans of course know that it can’t actually be John Kramer (Tobin Bell), as he was killed back in Saw III. Bell is supposed to be involved though, so he’ll likely once again appear in flashback.
Jigsaw is directed by Peter and Michael Spierig, helmers of the cult hit 2009 vampire movie Daybreakers. For their part, the pair tells EW that while they “don’t shy away from the gore” and that there are some “pretty wild traps,” they also tried to make the film “not quite as vicious and more fun.” After seven years dormant, the world will find out if the Spierig’s succeeded this fall.
